About Open Play
Open Play is an independent library of small open-source games. We want to make fun browser games easier to discover and enjoy.
Selection criteria
Games must have a clear open-source license, run in a browser and require no platform account. Each game includes rules, a link to the original project and the complete source code for our hosted version.
Authors & licenses
2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli, Tower Building by BMQB, Inc and contributors, and ONOFF by Daniel Marino and Brad Dunbar; all use the MIT license. Hextris was created by Logan Engstrom, Garrett Finucane and contributors and uses GPL-3.0-or-later. Mine Line is an original game by Open Play contributors and uses the MIT license. Copyright in each game and its dependencies belongs to the respective rights holders; see the included notices for details.
Original games
Mine Line is our original browser strategy game, inspired by factory automation and tower defense. Mine copper, deliver it to turrets by conveyor belt and survive eight waves. It uses no Mindustry source code or assets. The game code and artwork are included in the complete source download for our hosted version.
Starport Breakout is an original browser space shooter by Open Play contributors, under the MIT license. Auto-fire, a choice of three upgrades between waves and a final boss make up a six-wave escape challenge. The code, interface and artwork are included in the complete hosted source download.
Our changes
In 2048, we removed the original site’s “official version” wording and added a hosted-version label. In Hextris, we removed external ads, analytics, remote score submissions and external font requests. In Tower Building, we removed the original analytics scripts and invite button, and turned sound off by default. For ONOFF, we added a page title and device information. Change notes and source code are included in the downloads.
Adapted games
Coast Racer is adapted from JavaScript Racer code by Jake Gordon and contributors. The code uses the MIT license, and the original license notice is retained. New code and all original artwork are provided by Open Play contributors, also under MIT. All artwork was independently drawn; no original project images or music are used.
Our Coast Racer adaptation adds three-lap races, auto-acceleration, touch steering and braking, a three-second start countdown, and local records for the fastest lap and completed races. The full source download includes the adapted code and the implementation of the original artwork.
Orbit Pinball is based on Planck.js’s official Pinball physics example. The original example is by Erin Catto; the physics engine is by Erin Catto, Ali Shakiba and contributors. Game design, interface and artwork are original work by Open Play contributors. The example, physics engine, and our new code and artwork all use the MIT license, with full notices included in the source.
Orbit Pinball turns the physics example into a three-ball high-score challenge with combos up to 5×, a three-target bonus, a fixed four-second ball-save window after each ball’s first launch, and keyboard and multi-touch controls. Planck.js 1.5.1 is served locally. High scores stay in the current browser; see the privacy notice for visit and gameplay analytics.
Independent operation
This site has no official affiliation with CTW, G123 or the original creators of the third-party games we host. Game submissions, public comments and global leaderboards are not currently available. Player ratings stay in the current browser and do not represent a site-wide score.
